A Little Bit of Sunday Flying
A Little Bit of Sunday Flying
In the midst of all these temperature swings, rain vrs snow/sleet, and winds blasting back and forth, I was suddenly presented with a day of light winds 5-8 mph and temps in the high 50's.
"Well, let's unwind some string!"
The front yard was still borderline marsh, but mostly walkable, so a call went out to Patrick for a little 1/2A spinning.
My 1/2A Nobler and sheetwing Ringmaster survived the usual aerial hijinks. We got in some good flying 'till the temps started to drop later in the day, and everything made it back to the shop in good shape.
It's occurs to me that this session's photos are pretty much like those I've posted before, but that's all I got. Maybe there'll be some new talent dangling out on the spiderwire on the next round.
The one stand-out of the day was Patrick's landing gear-less PT-19 that had a fairly sporty look about it.

Woohoo! Good for you, Kim.
You do great capturing the essence of flying smalls!
They all look great too.
Can you tell us anything special about the Nobler? I see ansymetric wing, attractive profile, and what looks to be great moments.
Will it loop? Fly inverted? Kit or scratch-built?
Thanks for the "show."

Hey Jim,
Thank You...it was fun!
My Nobler is an ARF from Stan at:
www.vintageperformancemodelairplanes.com
It leaps from it's kitchen mat stooge, and maxes out at it's top end very quickly. I'm limited to 35' in my front yard circle, am trying to slow it down so I don't run out of sky with some of my antics.
With it's 3/8 oz wedge tank, I get plenty of time to scare myself on each flight. Loops...inside & outside...horizontal 8's are all easy. I can do vertical 8's if I take it back over the top, but am almost busting mach when it comes out the bottom---therefore the need for LESS speed! This is why there's a 6x3 prop bolted to it's snout.
If my reflexes were quicker, it might not matter as much, but I'm still thankful to stay with it as I do in my 66th year of existence!
One mod to be considered is to cut back the covering past the leading edge, and add 1/32 doublers to the nose to beef it up there, along with a new ply firewall. This is what I'm doing for Patrick's plane, as that plastic engine mount has two bolts just going through balsa, and it was starting to wobble in run.
To be fair to the plane, Patrick has planted his several times, and the balsa just couldn't take it. I'm probably just moving the trauma back to the wing for the next time he goes mole hunting.
Please pardon the slime:

P.S. It came with landing gear, but I'm almost always flying over grass, so I removed the gear and "stooge it".

Hey Kim, I just took a look at the plans I have for the 1/2A Nobler and what I've got are from MAN for a sheet wing and profile fuse. Can you tell me more about yours? Scratch built? Kit? Plans? TIA.
Edit-. Shoulda read the whole thread

Re: A Little Bit of Sunday Flying
Great pics. Looks like you guys were having a lot of fun. I've got 2 or 3 C/L planes that are flyable, but haven't flown those for some time. If I get my nerve up, I may try some half tanks so they will run out of fuel before I run out of gas.
The weather on this side of the creek was equally nice. Kathy and I walked the extended bike trail on the other side of the landing strip for the Paducah Aeromodelers club, but as nice as the weather, no one was flying. She owns about 5 acres behind her house and many times when I'm over here, I can fly R/C literally out of the back yard.

I like the Black and white Ring too and the Black Panther decal on the wing helps to make it. Got one of the original smaller decals myself. Would be fun to blow it up and make some transfers.
But it's the Nobler that gets the notice. Love the picture of it hanging out on the lines. Brought back memories of my P-40 doing the same thing, images that are forever imprinted on my mind. Reading the current issue of "Air Classics" magazine this morning I dwelled on the "Bone yard" pictures and thought that I should gather all the survivors that I have actually flown and snap a picture. Bet everyone here would like to do the same.

Re: A Little Bit of Sunday Flying
That's exactly what I was looking for! Thanks Kim! I might have to get all three.
My dad built a Magician that he flew beautifully. Then he handed me the handle. My first flight with a model bigger than 1/2A. I did a few laps, felt pretty good about it and tried a loop. Turned into a figure 9. I cried, dad laughed. On the way home we stopped at the hobby shop and got a Nobler kit. We had a blast with that airplane. I have no idea where it finally ended up, all I know is that I didn't trash it.
