Any ideas for a TD 020 muffler?
Due to noise restrictions at my club I would like to sort out some kind of muffler for my Cox 020 engines.
I seem to remember seeing some prototypes made by Greg at Kamtechnik. I was hoping that it would be manufactured, however I guess that is not going to happen…
So, does anybody have any ideas how I could make one? It needs to be effective, be possible without needing milling/lathe and, of course, look good!!
A bit of a long shot I know - but thought I may as well ask…
Many Thanks,
=Adrian=

Re: Any ideas for a TD 020 muffler?
Cox made a .020 size muffler. Problem you are going to run into besides finding one is they will rob power due to SPI. They do exist though and they do muffle effectively, just a crapshoot on how much power you lose. It may be possible to eliminate the SPI and there may even be .020 piston/cylinders that were made to eliminate SPI. I guess you could check yours and see.

Re: Any ideas for a TD 020 muffler?
Greg is still wanting to do a run of mufflers and header versions.
Perhaps he will see this post and chime in. I have tested 4 prototypes.
Very cool and does a great job of reducing noise and oil goo spray.

Am I remembering correctly that Greg also prototyped a TD 020 throttle? If so, I’d also like some of those…

So you lost almost 3K with the muffler? Not bad.

Re: Any ideas for a TD 020 muffler?
The best results with the muffler was with Mattes Nelson flat coil head adapter.
The other results shown with a cox plug. Kamtechnik turbo head also out performed
the stock plug tested open exhaust.
Nano TD.020 Nelson Flat Coil Plug / HQ Carbon 3.6 x 4.5N Prop
Monster power per prop calc:
Static: 24,870 rpm / 106 mph Pitch Speed / .083 hp / 62w
Static Peak: 25,113 rpm /107 mph Pitch Speed / .086 hp / 64w
4.6oz thrust .Bob Mattes Glow Plug Adapter / 30% Nitro / 20% oil
Thanks to the pressure tap the tank was bone dry when the engine
stopped providing steady rpm throughout the run.

This would be by far the best option. I have some of his heads and backplates - excellent work!! Do you have any contact with Greg? Any idea when he is planning to produce the mufflers?

Re: Any ideas for a TD 020 muffler?
I would love to see Greg make 049 Mufflers like the one in the picture above that 1/2Anut posted! I have used on an 049 TD the standard cox muffler with timing shims that Matt sent me, and I understand both Matt and Bernie will both have for sale soon. They worked very well at removing the SPI and the TD ran very well indeed and was much quieter. Though I think half the noise from a TD is induction noise! I didnt find all the problems sometimes suggested with the Timing Shims and Muffler, I had to experiment with things and I have a very good setup that I am very happy with and it means I can fly in noise restricted locations I otherwise could not fly in.
Sorry this may not be a lot of direct help to you as it is 049 experience, but I certainly found the right combination of shims, muffler, head, venturi setup, all worked very well together without the drastic power loss I had expected!
Good luck with yours.

A year goes by in the blink of an eye…
Just wondering if there are any updates on the availability of a 020 muffler?
Many Thanks,

I would think that an 0.020 engine wouldn't be THAT loud?

Re: Any ideas for a TD 020 muffler?
I live in London (England). My club flying site is not very far from a residential area. We can’t afford to get complaints as we may loose permission to fly IC models - That would make me very unpopular!! The pitch of the 020 sound seems to exaggerate its volume.
Best Regards,

Hello, look, I don't know how it will be there in London, but I suppose that some turner can make the part you need, what's more, I would do it myself for the pleasure of machining and without cost, we're just far away and it's all a matter be able to ship from my country, however, you can present this idea to a friendly turner and they can make one for your Cox .020, it is the same but smaller. Made in a single piece of aluminum alloy. By way of collaborating on a solution, perhaps this can then be useful.
Good luck.
