Broken Enya .049-II Series #4 engine
Hello musterpilot and welcome to the Cox Engine Forum!
I know a little about your problem with a broken crankshaft.
I had one on one of my earlier Enya .049 that was rear induction. ( veiw the link below: )
https://www.coxengineforum.com/t14494-small-enya-engine-049-with-a-broken-crank-shaft?highlight=broken+crank+shaft
Ken Enya (Enya Metal Products) will not have any replacement crankshafts as I have tried, even for your engine.
Ther is a Japanese company that can custom make a shaft for you, but it will be at a good cost.
The company is: Mokoken
Here is a link to their website:
Mokoken Labs
I do have some of their custom engines that I purchased from their website (when available)
As for a replacement crankshaft --- it will be a tough one to find?
I've been remanufacturing the Enya engines that I have acquired from Ken Enya and I have been finding out what available stock that he has on hand.
My last order had unsatisfactory parts that were not usable.
see the link below:
https://www.coxengineforum.com/t16899-update-received-my-enya-parts-order-not-exactly-enya-s-top-quality?highlight=enya+10+muffler
Enya is really not producing engines anymore and the availability of replacement parts are getting smaller.
As for the thread size of the crankshaft, it is M4 x .75 Thd (Japanese Industry Standard -- JIS)
JIS was used in Japan until the late 1980's then they changed to the standards used today.
And the smaller screws on your engine.
They are M2.3 and 4mm long
Below are the instructions for your engine: (Japanese and translated)
Unfortunately, Enya doesn't have a "long" nut for your .049 engine like they do for the Enya .06 /.08 and .10 engines.
Maybe, you could make one or get one made?
Here are some of the twenty-seven of my .049 I have completed:
Photos of some out of the box / plastic case:
The one with the plastic venturi and muffler I purchased from Mokoken Labs (about $203.00 with shipping)

Hi thanks for the information I got in touch with Ken Enya a few years ago and he told me he didn't have a shaft for it then but no problem I will get it sorted

I'm looking for "two" .049 crankcases. Ken doesn't have any of them either.
I'm not really needing them right now, because the engines I want to replace the cases have been modified and I would like to get them back to almost looking how they originally were before they got butchered?
Below is a photo of one of the modified .049 engines (got it cheap for $25.00 plus shipping of $12.99)
The worst of the two

The chopped-up case engines might be my parts engines if I don't find cases for them?

Re: Enya .049 glow engine
Looks like you made your own extended nut like they do have for the larger .06/.08/.09 and .10 Enya engines.
One way to make that slightly shorter (broken) shaft work.
You did a great job!
Did the information I gave you on the thread size help out on making the extended prop nut?
I'm still remanufacturing these small engines back to like new condition.
Total now of:
Enya .049 --- 75 engines
Enya .06 glow --- 92 engines
Enya .06 diesel --- 48 engines
Enya .08 --- 28 engines
Enya .10 --- 46 engines
Completed, and in new or original boxes as some have been run and others, new in the box, but gummed up from long storage.
If you need a muffler, Ken Enya has some "in stock"
Or you can get a muffler from Bob Brooks:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/295719090668?hash=item44da3b39ec:g:BbEAAOSwLRpef7RW
The muffler you may have to work on it a little to get the muffler to clamp together.
I have had to use my Dremel a little to make the muffler fit better around the cylinder head as the casting is not exactly correct.
It won't take too much to get the muffler fitted correctly.
When done correctly and the screw is tightened down to where the muffler clamps together, you have a good seal around the cylinder head at the bottom and the upper part of the muffler fits nicely into the 2nd lowest fin slot and the muffler clamps together very well to seal any leaks when it is together, and it tightens up to the cylinder to where the muffler won't move around.

Very nicely done!! I'm always impressed with the skill levels of the folks on this forum.
Re: Enya .049 glow engine
That is a creative way to fix a problem plus upgrade it's looks with that custom spinner nut.musterpilot wrote:Latest up date on my 049 I bought a mini lathe and this is what I have done to solve the broken thread
I imagine another possible solution is a soft steel bolt of sufficient working diameter, mill off the external threads plus shorten, drill and tap the center to fit the threaded prop stud.
Love the nylon venturi insert, is it your own design to replace an R/C carburetor?

Hi musterpilot,
Great job on a cool Enya...
Obviously, you have not lost any lathing skills...
Weird R/C carb. ?
The NV and fuel intake are ahead of the rotary throttle/barrel/butterfly?. Not seen that before.
This is why I like CEF here, I like learning...
Take care,
Have fun,
Dave

No,
That is a straight venturi carb --- FreeFlight/ U-control ------- no throttle control.
This is a special modified engine made by Mokoken Lab.
Comparing the stock Enya .049 engine to the Mokoken modified Enya .049 is like comparing a Cox .049 Baby Bee to a Cox .049 Tee Dee engine.
But of course, purchasing a "special" built Mokoken isn't cheap as they do very limited builds.
The most expensive Mokoken engine I have is an Enya .10 Diesel which only six were ever built and sold.
Originally Enya never built an Enya .10 diesel (ever).
Here is a link to their website to look over some of their "special" built engines that they have done over the years.
http://mokoken.driven.jp/index.html
I have many of Mokoken modified Enya .049 engines.
Below are photos of the first Mokoken engine that I purchased and took apart to compare the differences from a stock Enya .049 engine and a modified Mokoken "special" engine.
I have posted earlier (at one time) the differences between the Enya .049 and the Mokoken .049 engine.
Last is a slightly modified piston skirt to have SPI (sub port induction)
And the compression ratio is much higher than a stock Enya engine.
Stock Enya .049 is 8:1 and the Mokoken is 10:1
The piston cylinder has been modified to be shorter than the stock Enya cylinder to where the piston is exposed more at bottom dead center and top dead center it is about 1mm higher than the stock.

Great job on the spinner nut musterpilot….Fine craftsmanship and a good save!
sosam, Interesting differences between the standard Enya’s and Mokoken’s….Just curious,
Do you know what they stuff the crankshaft with to improve flow?…. Never seen that before

The stuff looks to me like our JB Weld?
It's not like regular epoxy because you can't scrape it with a pick and plastic looking shaving come off?
Probably gotten darker over time from the fuel?
I don't see a problem with using the steel version of the JB Weld to do the job?
Just make sure all of the oil is removed from the steel (crankshaft) and as for the hole there, it is pretty rough, so the JB Weld should bond well enough to stay in place?

I used my pitch gages and looked close to be M4x.75
When I tried to match it up to the M4x.8 --- the threads were smaller than the .8 threads.
Somewhere on one of the "Enya" instruction/parts replacement sheets I think, that is where I saw the M4x.75 and that has been what I have been using to chase both the crankshaft and the prop nut and it seemed like it was the right fit?
Maybe for tightening the prop down with the nut, both have stretched a bit to where it is close to being M4x7.5?

Re: Enya .049 glow engine
The use of JB-Weld reminds me of a Fox .35 burp fix. The bypass is too liberal in size, velocity of the air-fuel mix is not quick enough to keep Castor oil globs from collecting in the crankcase. With head facing outward from the circle for a pancake mounted engine, the centrifugal force and insufficient velocity causes the engine to burp in manuevers when the combustion chamber gets clobbered with the extra oil.
Solution was to JB-Weld a hardwood stick like a popsicle stick on the side of the bypass to reduce its cross sectional area, increasing the air-fuel velocity so the oil globs don't form.
The Fox engines mounted upright don't experience the burp problem, which I guess helps to explain why full fuselages are preferred for Fox engines.
Anyway, this is what I gleaned from the various forums. (I don't have a Fox .35 and have never experienced the infamous burp problem.)

Post it on R/C Groups "Classified section under the "Aircraft-Fuel-Engins and Accessories"
Below is the link to the exact page of the site.
https://www.rcgroups.com/aircraft-fuel-engines-and-accessories-fs-w-362/
As for the condition --- that would then set the price for it.
As for me, I have plenty of the Enya .049-II engines.
I have a total of 47 of the Enya .049-II engines and have seven more to refurbish.
Which I am doing now this winter, along with Enya .06 / Enya .08 and Enya .10 engines.
Total of 47 in this box alone ---- New in box and others reconditioned (refurbished)

I went to RCG for sale section from the link, @sosam117 . Noticed your reply to seller on suitable muffler. Is this the one you were referring to?
https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?4471313-ENYA-049-R-C-engine For Sale $125.00 USD Buyer pays shipping
Since you posted, listing is nearing bottom of first page soon to be pushed back to 2nd.
Those Enya's are nice, but a bit too much quid for me. Been filling my need for speed with a recent Tee Dee .051 and Medallion .049, a .049 Space-Bug Jr. that needs test run and maybe a nice piston and cylinder, and G-Mark .061 R/C that I will be cleaning up soon, plus a 25-in. Scientific Musciano profile Cessna 170 with Fox .09 Rocket.

Re: Enya .049 glow engine
GallopingGhostler,
After your Tee Dee .51, Medallion .049, a .049 Space-Bug Jr. have been run for a few years, that Enya .049-II will be as strong of a runner (and better after it will be full broken it) over those worn-out Cox engines.
Yes, they are not screamers like the Tee Dee .51 or the Medallion .049 but it would keep up with the Space-Bug Jr.
Now, a Mikoken built Enya .049 would be about equal to a Medallion .049 or even a Tee Dee .049?
I do have a number of Mikoken built Enya engines and on the outside, it looks like a standard Enya .049 or .06 or .08 or .10.
But the inside components are not the usual Enya parts but custom-made parts to use very few original parts of that Enya engine.
I posted here about a year ago of the differences of the Enya parts verses the Mikoken custom made parts.
One simple way to identify a Mikoken engine is that it has a spinner nut instead of just a standard threaded nut for the prop.
One Mikoken custom engine I bid on and won was a limited production of an Enya .10 custom built .10 Diesel engine.
Enya never built an Enya .10 as a diesel, all of them were produced as glow engines.
Custom Mikoken Emya .10 Diesel engine (notice spinner nut)
