36 years ago to this day: Wreak of the Edmund Fitzgerald
Was just listening to my radio and completely forgot today is the 36th anniversary of the Wreak of the Edmund Fitzgerald that went down on November 10, 1975. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SS_Edmund_Fitzgerald This topic gets talked about on the news here at this time of the year.

Hard to believe it's been that long. Of course, my memory probably wouldn't have been impacted by the tragedy if not for Gordon Lightfoot's haunting ballad.

How true. The Great Lakes have swallowed up innumerable ships and lives, none of which I'm familiar with.

Yeah...It's impossible to properly commemorate every tragic death...if a person tried, I think it would be a full-time job that would drive them to suicide.
All we can do is try to pick the ones that come to our attention, with maybe a note or some financial support for the families left behind.

Re: 36 years ago to this day: Wreak of the Edmund Fitzgerald
I've visted the Maritime Museum of the Great Lakes and examined the display on the Edumund G. Fitzergarld very closely. Seems that Lake Superior was SO rough on that fateful day of the sinking that the Fitzgerald struck the bottom of the lake and broke into two pieces then descended to it's "grave" where it still lies..
To truely understand the size of Lake Superior and how terribly rough it can become in November one must actually see the lake and see this museum display.
Lightfoot's ballad is a fitting tribute to the men lost and the "Edmund G. Fitzgerald" as well as the power of "angry water".
