Two questions :
Did you have a large pepperoni pizza before you went to bed ?
Did someone mention the words "Mothership" or "Beta Reticuli" ?

No, but some spicy tacos and an episode of Mystery Science Theater 3000 may have been involved...

Ah Yes...
I had a feeling that your epiphany for a new flying model design had some off the planet influences.
MST3K is my all time favorite funny show to watch ever ....
With it's 4 or 5 gags per minute, I would laugh so hard I thought I was gonna hurt myself !!!!
I almost had to tie my wife to the chair to get her to watch it the first time. Then she took to it like a wino after a ham sandwich !! Funny...Funny.
Those spicy tacos would do it for me also like pizza indigestion dreams.
Now I can wait to see the new idea !!!

Well, got this out of my head and on to the building board finally.  Wife's in the hospital, so this isn’t going to be a quick build.  Usually I get the idea, build it quickly, and then post pictures after finishing the plane.  But this one I’ll post as I go.  So, here ‘tis:

If anyone can correctly guess what it’s going to be before I post fuselage pics, I’ll let them do the test flight on this one.

I'll have to wait until Jan 6th for mine...

As for the plane design, interesting as always... Could it be some kind of a twin engine, twin fuselage design? Such as the NA Bronco maybe?

Well, brought the wife home today, so I had a little time to work on this.  Unfortunately, even though I built the panel pinned down, it had a little warp to it, so I had to straighten it out.  **SIGH **

I cut a couple of ribs and straightened out the panel, and then revisited the bellcrank.  I decided to change out the existing mount for a floating bellcrank.  I’d have preferred a 3” bellcrank, but one wouldn’t quite fit, so I had to go with a 2 ½” bellcrank.  I crimped the leadouts and then I did some more sheeting.

Hmmm…  an OV-10.  I guess it could be stretched into one. The ribs are a little thin for that, but if I extended the spars three or four inches and fitted ribs out to the end I guess it’d work.  I could fatten up the rib template and use that.  Ah, well.  Another new project for the list.

No time to start on anything more tonight, so I think I'll get a few flights in on the C/L simulator.

Okay, when I got home tonight I cut the fuselage blank for this thing. First pic of the fuselage blank:

You can still guess, but I get to do the maiden flight now.  Kinda glad Kari didn’t guess it, postage to Finland would have been astronomical.

Got a little more time tonight.  I cut and sanded the fuselage to shape, cut out for the engine bearers and installed the bearers, sanding them to shape.  I then did the cutout for the wing.  Test fitting:

The wing structure keeps me thinking about a twin engine, twin tail model, and the bellcrank location suggests some kind of a twin tail boom type too Huh...

The fuselage kind of has the engine bearers up front and the tail goes all the way to the back so...

My last guess: Twin Mustang Reno Racer?

BTW Mark, I thought I would have to fly over and hitch-hike the rest of the way to Batjac Aeroworks HQ for the maiden flight. That would have been a long way to travel just to wreck a plane lol!

I hadn't looked at it like that.  If I narrowed the nose a little, it does look like a Caudron, doesn't it.

roddie wrote:I think it could be a De Havilland DH88 Comet.. except for the nose.. Huh...

That's another good idea for another day.  BTW, Bill Turner down in Riverside, CA who built the DH-88 replica was an old family friend.  He asked me thrice to go to work for him building old race planes.  That would have been my dream job.  Too bad you can't live on what little the job would have paid...

Last guess? Don't give up so easily, you're doing great.  Did anyone ever race an F-82 at Reno?  That'd be a race to see.

And, if you did come over and hitch-hike across the country, it'd be like reliving your college days...
